Nestled in the hollow of the Austrian Alps, the birthplace of Mozart dazzles with its baroque fortress and its high peaks. This year, underlines Lonely Planet (LP), Salzburg will celebrate with great pomp the 100 years of its classical music festival. A golden opportunity to go there.

The festival, one of the biggest events in the classical music world, is still a great celebration of opera, classical music and theater – it will be even grander. Salzburg will release the big game for the centenary, with unique exhibitions and events throughout the historic center: concerts, plays, lectures, Mozart mornings, etc. At the top of the poster, as always, the Jedermann by Hugo von Hofmannsthal, play-like mystery, whose splendor illuminate the Domplatz. Take out your dirndl or your lederhosen, grab your tickets several months in advance, and get ready to heat up this summer like Amadeus (without the wig, maybe).

WASHINGTON, DC, UNITED STATES

Added to the excitement of the presidential election the same year, this will make Washington DC one of the most dynamic cities in the United States. Politics aside, Washington’s renaissance is in full swing: docks have been renovated, new museums have sprung up and restaurants are booming. With the green roofs, the planting of hundreds of trees and an innovative set of floating wetlands, the city has never been so green.

CAIRO, EGYPT

Egypt let Tutankhamun’s treasures go on a world tour in 2018, saying it was the last time the pharaoh’s funeral items left the country. If you want to admire the riches of ancient Egypt in the future, you will need to visit the Grand Egyptian Museum (GME) in Cairo. This state-of-the-art museum is slated to open in Giza – inch Allah (God willing). Here you can admire the astonishing collection of the largest museum in the world dedicated to a single civilization. For those going on vacation to the Red Sea and Luxor, adding the Pyramids and GME to their itinerary will be as easy as pie once the Sphinx Airport in Giza opens for domestic flights.

GALWAY, IRELAND

Superbly bohemian, Galway is arguably Ireland’s most attractive city. Here, lively music resonates in the brightly colored pubs and cafes allow you to be in the front row to applaud the street performers. Street shows, live and digital arts are on the program, as well as concerts, theater, and first-rate dance performances. You will sleep afterwards: in Galway, even the street musicians play until late into the night.

And then there will be installations, contests to measure Beethoven’s genius, picnic-performances, and “home concerts” where local musicians will open their doors to the public.

LA PAZ, BOLIVIA

Perhaps the futuristic capsules of the world’s largest cable car system, floating above La Paz, best symbolize the city’s new ambition. There were only three lines in 2014. Below, the city has fled the monotony and is moving towards a more radiant and inspired future. Between a self-taught architect and future great chefs from brand new cooking schools, everyone thrives here, and not because of imported ideas or global trends but thanks to a rediscovered pride in Bolivia’s indigenous roots. It is easy to understand why when we see the tourists who linger more and more in La Paz before leaving to visit the rest of the country.

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Bohemian café, intimate homestay in peaceful little streets with architecture dating from the colonial era, series of avant-garde galleries: the city fully accepts its history while fully accepting its new relaxation.

VANCOUVER, CANADA

It therefore seems logical that Vancouver is at the forefront of sustainable urban development. For the visitor, the benefits of the Greenest City 2020 Action Plan launched a while ago can only be enriching. Its network of cycle and pedestrian lanes has grown significantly, including a magnificent 28 km section along the beaches and the coast, and public transport has been modernized, making it easier to move from one site to another. Otherwise, simply put yourself in the shade of one of the 102,000 trees that have been planted there since 2010.

DUBAI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES

Meanwhile, the very interesting Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art has moved into a magnificent building designed by Olson Kundig in the city’s Golden Triangle Creative District.

ATHENS, GREECE

Democracy is born here, politics is born here (the real one, or at least what ” should be “). Many things are born here: we are in the cradle of Mediterranean civilization, we are in a city where the weight of history is such as to create an echo without borders. Although the economic situation is not prosperous, Athens remains an essential point of reference for those who love ancient history. But also for those who don’t love it.

NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA

One of the most fascinating destinations of the stars and stripes continent, home of blues and jazz, and with a troubled history still indissolubly linked to the first slave routes from Africa. Not even Hurricane Katrina of 2005 managed to wipe out his soul, which reveals itself in the French Quarter, at the Café du Monde, even in its famous cemeteries! And it is even the city of Ghosts and Voodoo, need more? Not to be missed: Jackson square, Bourbon street, Frenchmen street, St. Louis Cemetery.

Not to be missed: the Kinkaku-ji (the Golden Pavilion), the Nishiki Market, the Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine, the Pure Water Temple.

SIENA, TUSCANY

Pearl of the Tuscan region, still linked in architecture and soul to its medieval identity. It is a land of the Palio, of good wine, but also of museums and art galleries. Just a few minutes away is even the legendary Sword in the Stone of British memory, and in general the surroundings are spectacular too.

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL

It is the city of carnival, of the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema, of Monte Corcovado and of Christ the Redeemer. It is simply Rio, one of the most famous cities in the world, and there will be a reason. Gigantic (about 6 million inhabitants), it is also known for its favelas, it is true, but also for its football and the Tijuca National Park. A life is not enough to know it, but an instant is enough to love it!

AMSTERDAM, HOLLAND

And enough to say that Amsterdam is all transgression, red light districts and legal cannabis! For heaven’s sake, it certainly is, but it is much, much more. Amsterdam is its canals, it is the capital of modernity, it is art. It is mills and it is Van Gogh, and it is also many, many stories and identities.

ROME, ITALY

And with this, the Bel Paese takes home 3! But how could Roma Caput Mundi be missing, the absolute center of the ancient world, a city where every corner shines with its own light. The Colosseum is among the 7 wonders of the modern world, but all of Rome, between monuments, cuisine and history, here is fourth, but it is certainly second to none!

BARCELONA, SPAIN

Here is Barcelona, the city of Gaudì and the Sagrada Familia, Parc Guell and Montjuic. But also Las Ramblas, and why not the football temple of Camp Nou the Barcelona stadium of the award-winning Leo Messi golden ball!

LONDON, UK

The cosmopolitan city par excellence rises on the lowest step of the podium. The city of parks, the European capital that dictates trends and is itself a trend.
