Cool Things to Build in Minecraft

You have just purchased Minecraft and, after a few hours of play and exploration, you are wondering if there is the possibility of creating projects in complete freedom and how to deal with their realization. This is how things are, am I right? in that case, you don’t have to worry, because I have all the answers you are looking for. Read below and find out what you can build in Minecraft and what can you do in Minecraft when bored.

A lock

Castles are a fun thing to build in Minecraft. Why is that, really? Who wouldn’t want to live in their own castle? Castles are generally easy to build because they use simple materials, like stone and wood, which are easy to obtain. Castles can range from a small fortress with a few towers connected to each other to a huge walled city. You can add a lot of things: a wooden gate, a water or lava ditch with a bridge, fountains, statues, gardens, etc. Bonus: Walls and moats keep monsters away from your base! Any monsters that approach can be bowed down from above your walls.

Private mansion

Building a mansion for yourself in Minecraft Survival can be a lot of fun. Design your own bedroom, storage rooms, hallways, grand staircases and much more. You can go a step further and build a nice fence around your property and have a nice garden or fountain in front of your house. For more inspiration, you can simply search Google for real mansion examples to model your Minecraft build.

A city

Create a collection of buildings in a similar style and connect them by roads to form a Minecraft city. For extra protection, consider building walls to protect yourself from creepers and other mobs. You can consider building styles such as medieval stone and wood, Asian pagodas, or a desert theme with sandstone. If you are looking for cool things to build in Minecraft, a city can definitely keep you occupied since there are so many buildings you can add. Some ideas for city buildings: banks, hospitals or medical clinics, warehouses, hotels and town halls (with a courtroom and a prison).

Modern city

A modern city with skyscrapers, cobblestone streets, lampposts, parks, and sidewalks is a huge project, but one that can be very rewarding if you have a lot of time to devote to construction. There are a lot of repetitive constructions (like adding multiple floors to the same skyscraper), so it might not be the best thing to build in survival Minecraft. This kind of building would be much easier to do in creative mode, or with server plugins like World Edit to help. Otherwise, you can still do it in survival mode with a group of friends.

Farm

Everyone needs a farm in Minecraft to grow their own food and supplies. You can create a simple farm with slots for essentials like trees and wheat, or a more whimsical outdoor farm with a windmill and barn. Another option is to create an indoor or underground farm, but this is more work. Plants need light to grow, so you need to make sure there is enough light through torches, lanterns, or lamps. A cool Minecraft farm idea could be to make a glass greenhouse, with natural light to grow your plants. The greenhouse will keep animals and monsters out, but you should still light it up a bit so the monsters don’t spawn at night.

Gardens

Gardens go with almost anything, such as a city, the front of your house, or even just yourself. Try to decorate your garden with flowers, trees, gravel paths, benches and water. The fountains are a very beautiful central element of the gardens, but sometimes it is difficult to get the water to flow as desired. To get flowers for your garden, you can use bone meal on grass to grow them, or find them naturally in the world. Some biomes will have many more flowers than others.

Famous landmark

Google a photo of a famous monument and use it as a reference to build something amazing in Minecraft. For example, famous castles like Neuschwanstein the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben, the Statue of Liberty, etc. Tip: If you travel a lot, choose the favorite object that you have seen on your travels. If you’re playing Minecraft on Survival, you can try going for something less detailed or building a miniature version of the landmark. Without the flying and infinite blocks on creation, it can be difficult to build on survival.

The fountain

Fountains can be simple or large and complex. They are a good decoration for gardens, castle courtyards or even interiors. Try using “steps” to allow the water to flow down, and putting stone or fluorescent glass in the water. With Mojang’s changes to the water flow, fountains are now a bit trickier to make and may require some experimentation to get the water to flow perfectly.

For more beauty, you should light up your fountain to make it more visible at night. This can be done with blocks such as Glowstone or Redstone lamps. If you are using lamps, you can even hook them up to a daylight detector so that the fountain light only comes on at night. This can be a fun activity to do, for adults and children.

The underground city

To build an underground city, find a large underground canyon or dig a huge hole with TnT. Put windows in the walls, hang vines, and have water or lava pillars (if you want). This can be a lot of work, especially if you have to dig large areas for farms or to grow trees. On a Minecraft server I was playing a long time ago, there was a very cool underground “vault city” that players were digging into. There were many hallways with doors to bedrooms and a huge atrium with trees and a garden. It is also possible to build hallways and secret rooms. If you like to dig, it can be fun to build something like this!

The pyramid

Pyramids are usually built in desert biomes with sandstone or sand. They are a good place to drop a beacon, and can be built in other biomes with different materials. If you want to keep an Egyptian theme, decorate the exterior with basins, columns, and sphinxes. Building a pyramid is very easy for most players, even in survival Minecraft. The construction plan is very simple, just make a really big square and then keep building smaller squares vertically until you reach the top of the pyramid.

The Arc

Arches can serve as an entrance to a city, base, or other building. They are fun to build and can be made from simple materials like stone or more luxurious materials like diamond or gold. It can be a large, impressive monument or a small gateway to a region.

The library

Create a building decorated with shelves, wood, red rugs and stained glass, or even just an adjacent room in your base and make it your enchanted zone. For more fun, use cobs to create hidden passages behind the shelves. Check out our library design and layout inspiration page for more ideas. Libraries are the perfect place to set up all your enchantment tables and even your potions brewing stands. Even if you don’t want to build a large library, you can build a small one near your enchantments and potions storage room.

The Cathedral

There are so many awesome churches and cathedrals in the world and building one in Minecraft can be quite difficult, especially in survival mode. However, they can be both a busy and satisfying project. For inspiration, find a picture of a famous cathedral online for your reference during construction. Don’t forget the stained glass windows!

Void Portal

Void portals don’t have to be boring, and there are so many different ways to do them. Try making a decorated room just for your Nether Portal, or create an even larger Nether Portal and decorate it (Nether Portals can be much larger than the standard small size). An added bonus is keeping your Void Portal in a separate room to prevent monsters from passing through it. For building materials, I recommend using materials found in the Nether, like Quartz, Netherrack, Netherbrick, or Lava. This will allow your portal to retain the Netherlands theme.

Fancy storage room

Storage rooms are an important part of any Minecraft house. They can be big, very organized, and decorated (if you want!). If you have the materials, use expensive blocks in your warehouse to show off your wealth, like gold, diamond, and emerald. For more ideas on building a Minecraft storage room, check out our article on designing a storage room here.

Floating Base

Floating bases aren’t just for Skyblock, they can be a fun thing to build in Survival Minecraft too. Build a large platform for yourself in the clouds, bring building materials, and start building a base up there. Make sure you have a safe way back down, such as a jump to a pool of water, a ladder, or some slime blocks to fall on. As an added bonus, if you are playing on a PvP server, a floating base high in the sky can allow you to stay hidden from other players. This is a good way to maintain privacy, as long as the base is not too large! Airbases are a good challenge to survive in Minecraft. Also, don’t forget to check out our list of the best Minecraft modpacks to play in 2020, which includes Sky Factory!

Docks

Try to build a village by the water, with wooden docks connecting the buildings. You can also build wooden boats to decorate your docks. The docks are also a relaxing place to go fishing (another thing to do when you’re bored in Minecraft). You should build docks where there is a lot of water, preferably on dry land next to a marine biome. After all, building docks in a river doesn’t really make sense.

Treehouse

Find a jungle biome and build a base in the trees, or build your own giant tree with wood, then build a Minecraft base inside the tree. Be careful, however, when fire propagation is activated. It would take just one fire pit or one villainous player to set your entire building on fire. If you are building in trees, it is also a good idea to build wooden bridges to connect the different cabins. However, it can make your home less private and more obvious if you are on a server with other players.

Sewers

Dig underground tunnels near your base and fill them with a little water. Add iron barriers or plants like vines and water lilies for decoration and you have a sewage system. If you want, you can also add rails here for mine carts to transport. A sewer system can also be an interesting way to connect different houses underground. To add a sense of adventure, you can include secret passages containing treasures for visitors. These passages can be hidden by pressure plates, levers, pistons, etc.

Underground passage

A Minecart metro system is the perfect way to get around your city or between buildings. Just dig a long underground corridor and add “stops” or “stations” along the way with exits to the world above. The underground system can also be used to connect different bases of different players on a server.

Labyrinth

Mazes can be easily constructed from leaves or hedges and placed in a garden. They can also be placed underground or inside buildings. For even more fun, you can incorporate traps and surprises using pistons like drops, shifting walls, and dispensers that shoot arrows. Don’t forget the reward box at the end of the maze. If you are playing in survival mode, you will definitely need the Silk Touch enchantment to collect the leaf blocks from the trees!

Statue

If you have an empty hallway in your build, you can fill the space by building a few statues. Create statues dedicated to your favorite items, monsters, animals or players. Statues like the one in the photo also make a nice decoration for the entrance to your building.

A bridge

Is there a large river near your base? Or even a deep canyon? Build a fancy bridge to cross it! Decorate the edges and supports of the bridge and also add lighting. Use beautiful materials like stone, brick, or wood instead of dirt and cobblestones. Your bridge can be as simple as a footbridge or as grand as the Golden Gate Bridge.

A lighthouse

A lighthouse in the distance that glows at night is a cool decoration if your base is by the ocean. A lighthouse doesn’t look great in a field or by a river, so be sure to build it on a beach by the sea! For a classic look, build your lighthouse out of white material and with some red accents (like concrete, wool or terra cotta). If you are good with red stone, you can even build a piston system to spin your headlight with the light.

A boat

Unfortunately, when you build a boat from blocks in Minecraft, you can’t sail it yourself. But it makes a good decoration on the water next to your base. The boats built are usually made of wood and the sails are made of wool. The boat can be as simple as a sailboat, or as large as a cruise ship with cabins for sleeping and eating.

Penthouse suite

If you are building a city and have skyscrapers, make your home in the sky like a penthouse suite. You would be able to easily monitor all of your Minecraft construction from the top of a skyscraper. It can be a bit more work if you don’t already have a skyscraper. For an authentic look, keep a modern design and get inspired by these New York TV series penthouses.

Clock Tower

Clock towers are an interesting item to build in any medieval themed town or even a modern city (think Big Ben in London). They are generally very easy to build and can be made from different building materials such as logs or stones. Unfortunately, it won’t be able to tell you the time (unless you’re a redstone wizard), but it’s still a nice decoration.

Bench and jump

Bank safes are a unique way to store your items in Minecraft. Build a bank, and at the back you have an entrance to an underground vault with your items. What better place to store your gold and diamonds than to be locked in an underground vault?

To make your safe more realistic, secure it with a very strong material. I like to build my bank chests out of obsidian and have different parts for different items. If you want to be even more creative, each floor can be locked and can only be opened by a lever in a secure office.

Restaurant or Tavern

You need a place to store your food and have easy access to it. Sure, you could put them in your storage chests, but what’s fun? Try to build a restaurant, kitchen or tavern with a seating area and a place to order and receive food. Your friends and visitors will also appreciate that you are playing on a server with other people.

Hospital

One cool thing you can build in Minecraft Survival is a great city hospital for you and your visitors. Organize an emergency room, waiting room and treatment rooms on the upper floors. If you want a smaller project, try making a small clinic building for your town. I recommend building with whiter materials, like white wool or quartz, so that the “H” or the red cross really stands out. Concrete would also be a good building material to use. To make the hospital more realistic, add a few beacons that automatically “heal” any player who enters the building.

A courthouse

Build a courthouse to take action against players breaking the rules on your server, or build one for fun. The interior should contain an area where people can watch the trial, and a front area for the judge and the defendant. Don’t forget to build an underground prison or attached to the courthouse. Most courthouses today are traditional with a wooden interior (wall, ceiling, floor, benches), although the exterior is made of something else like stone.

A prison

Prison servers are always quite popular on Minecraft, so why not build your own? Don’t forget the fence around the prison with the guard towers. A prison can have a lot of things because it has to be largely autonomous. It takes cell blocks, a cafeteria, security rooms, and whatever else you can imagine. You should definitely use Redstone to create a complete security system with lever doors.

Pixel art

Two-dimensional art can be done in Minecraft simply by using colored wool or other colored blocks like concrete. Pixel art might seem easy, but trust me, once you try it, you’ll find it’s a real challenge, yet still fun. To come up with pixel art ideas, people often use flags, slogans, Minecraft items (like a diamond pickaxe), or other players.

Cabin

A cabin by a lake or a river is a beautiful and comfortable place to live. You could build one just as a vacation home and connect it to your base with a road or track system from Minecart. If it is located by the water or at least has a lake, you have a relaxing place to fish. Minecraft is a fun game to play with friends or just by yourself.
