What is the Squid Game?

In Squid Game, 456 people riddled with debt are invited by a mysterious organization to play six games for a period of six days in order to obtain the jackpot of 33,789,041 euros. However, there is a catch in the game, if the participant loses he dies. To make your mouth water, in the first episode of the series, the contestants play a deadly version of statues, in which masked assassins, supervised by the Front Man, kill anyone with the slightest movement.

The Squid Game series stands out because it is like a psychological study of the depths of human nature and as a provocative indictment of capitalism.

The Premise

Seong Gi-hun is a gambling addict who owes loan sharks money. He lives with his mother and struggles to provide for his daughter. At a train station, a man gives Gi-hun a card inviting him to play a game. He accepts, gets knocked out, and wakes up in a dormitory with hundreds of other people.

There are 456 players in total, all of them strapped for cash. They are identified by numbers on the front of their suits. Whoever wins all six games wins € 33,789,041. In fact, the operation is led by The Front Man, who is masked along with other staff. Gi-hun recognizes a few players, including his former classmate Cho Sang-woo. He is also friends with player 001, an elderly man.

How does the Squid Game work?

The first round is Red Light, Green Light, but players are stunned when the losers are down. In fact, more than half of them couldn’t make it to the next round. After voting to end the game, Gi-hun goes to the police. However, only Detective Hwang Jun-ho believes his story, as his missing brother also received the same card.

The staff invite the players to come back and most of them return to the game. The next rounds include tug of war and marbles. And at the end there is the Squid Game, a popular activity for children in South Korea.

Meanwhile, Jun-ho sneaks into the game to find his brother. He raids Front Man’s office and finds that his brother won the match in 2015. When he tries to escape the complex, Front Man tracks him down. However, his brother was able to beat him. You got the story! Front Man is actually In-ho, Jun-ho’s brother.

Explanation of the end of the Squid Game: who wins?

In the sixth and final round, there are only two players left: Gi-hun and Sang-woo. In this duel, Gi-hun beats his old friend, but refuses to end the game. In fact, he invokes a clause in order to end the game, however, Sang-woo stabs himself anyway. When he dies, he asks Gi-hun to use some of the prize money to help his mother.

When Gi-hun returns home, he finds out that his own mother has passed away. After a year, he is still traumatized by the experience he had and has not yet touched the money he earned.

Gi-hum got a game card again

One night he received a gold playing card. After answering it, he finds Player 001, the old man, whose name is Oh Il-nam. The latter has created a new game to entertain bored rich people like him. In addition, he wanted to test whether humans had any innate goodness left.

Il-nam wanted to relive the experience one last time because he is dying. And he asks Gi-hun to play one last game with him to see if anyone helps a drunk man on the street before midnight. In this game, Gi-hun wins and Il-nam dies.

Gi-hun comes out of his depressed haze. He keeps his promises to help Sang-woo’s mother and get Sae-byeok’s daughter out of the orphanage. Then he goes to the airport to find his daughter. However, before taking his flight, Gi-hun encountered the man who recruited him. He takes the card and calls the number.

“I can’t forgive you for everything you do,” he said to the person on the other end of the phone (probably Front Man). He has a determined look on his face and it looks like Gi-hun is ready to take the game down once and for all.

Why has Squid Game been so successful?

Largely unknown when it was launched, the Korean series has become a real worldwide success, and the must watch tv series on Netflix. Writer-director Hwang Dong-hyuk believes his success is due to the universally recognizable characters he has created and the fact that the series simply represents the game of life, even in its most extreme and melodramatic setting.

The history of Squid Game

The concept of the series, inspired by The Hunger Games and Battle Royale, is as follows: 456 people, all of whom are struggling financially, are invited to take part in a mysterious survival competition. Participating in a series of traditional children’s games, but with deadly twists and turns, they risk their lives for a chance to win a prize of 45.6 billion won, which is equivalent to around 50 million Canadian dollars.

Why is the series controversial?

If the production impresses, the hyper-violence of Squid Game is quite disconcerting. A scene from the first episode shows a hundred people coldly shot by automatic snipers, after they have just lost the child 1,2,3 Soleil. The creator and director of the series also took ten years to convince a studio to produce his project. ” Too bloody, unfamiliar and obscure, ” they replied.

Squid Game offers an allegory of the damage of excessive capitalism in a country which experienced the Asian financial crisis of 1997 or the layoffs of Ssangyong Motors in 2009, two events which led to a wave of suicides. “South Korea has become quite recently and quite quickly a very unequal society over the past two decades, ” Vladimir Tikhonov, professor of Korean studies at the University of Oslo, told AFP.

A global phenomenon

The series therefore had the best start on Netflix since the creation of the platform. Note, however, that by “watch Squid Game “, the American firm implies “who watched at least two minutes of the first episode”. The figures announced are not subject to verification by a third party, unlike audience measurements for traditional television.

In any case, Squid Game broke the record so far held by a series of an entirely different kind, Bridgerton, recounting the sentimental intrigues of good British society at the beginning of the 19th century. It had been viewed by 82 million accounts during the four weeks following its posting at the end of 2020. Squid Game topped the charts on Netflix in more than 80 countries. Shortly after it went live, memes started popping up on the internet, proof of its induction into popular culture.
