Beck, or Guinevere Beck as she is known, is an aspiring, charismatic writer whose life is increasingly intertwined with Joe’s. In you, Beck is arguably the most likable character and her ambitions to write a book of her own is at the very core of the story. She is the catalyst for Joe’s journey into becoming a better person, albeit at a terrible cost.
The Story so far
Joe and Beck have been together for a few months, and from the outset, it appears that Joe is smitten. He spends a considerable amount of time and effort in and out of Beck’s life in order to learn more about her past and present. Although they argue often, they remain deeply in love. Unbeknownst to Beck, Joe had already snooped through her emails and social media, as well as breaking into her home and car on numerous occasions.
Peel’s Murder
As the story progresses, Joe discovers that Beck has been having an affair with an older writer, Benji, which further drives a wedge between them. Joe becomes extremely jealous and begins to believe that Beck would be better off without him. This is when Joe devises a plan to rid her of her “problems” – Peel, Beck’s stalker ex-boyfriend.
After discovering that Peel was stalking and threatening Beck, Joe decides to murder him, in order to protect her. Joe and his new accomplice, Delilah, kidnap and hold Peel hostage until Joe encourages him to take his life. With Joe’s encouragement, Peel jumps off the roof of a tall building and meets his tragic end.
Beck’s Murder
After committing murder, Joe is more paranoid than ever that someone will discover what he has done. In an attempt to secure his own safety, he eventually pushes Beck out of his life, unbeknownst to her that it is all a plan to keep her away from danger. Despite Joe’s efforts, Beck and her friends soon become suspicious and begin to investigate Peel’s disappearance.
Beck eventually discovers that Joe was behind Peel’s death and decides to confront him in his bookstore, where Joe hands her a scarf that he secretly planted in Peel’s car. Beck finally puts the pieces together and realizes that Joe murdered her boyfriend. After a heated confrontation, Joe pushes Beck off the railings of the bookstore, resulting in her death.
What follows?
In the aftermath of Beck’s death, Joe is consumed with guilt, regret and sadness – not only because he had killed the love of his life but also because he would never be able to make things right. He is also convinced that he will be found out and arrested due to the evidence that links him to the crime.
In an attempt to escape the situation, Joe enlists Delilah’s help to stage a fake disappearance and flee the country. After successfully executing this plan, Joe and Delilah move to Los Angeles where Joe is determined to start living a “normal” life. However, it isn’t long before Joe’s past comes back to haunt him and his old enemies finally catch up with him.
