Can People Change When Changing Is So Difficult?

Change is something that can be desired and sought by an individual or imposed from the outside. It is often something that is difficult to implement. When change is most needed, why is it so hard for people to move out of their comfort zone and embrace new habits or routines? We will explore these questions in this article to determine whether people can change when changing is so hard.

Why Is Change Difficult?

Change brings with it a fear of the unknown, as well as a fear of failure. It can be intimidating, especially when a person is trying to break away from habits they’ve practiced for so long.

Humans find comfort in what is familiar and the instinct to repeat known behaviors that worked in the past is strong. That deep-rooted habit can be hard to break and even harder when the habit reinforces negative behavior like overeating, smoking or substance abuse.

There is also the challenge of habit stacking. Habits are usually linked to other habits and this can make breaking out of the loop difficult. For example, stress can lead to overeating, and then guilt from overeating can lead to more stress. This can quickly become a daily cycle and it can be hard to break out of it.

Lastly, change involves work. It can be hard work to reach a goal or to create new habits and holds no guarantee of success. People don’t always like to put in the effort when they don’t know what the outcome will be. It requires a great deal of motivation to keep going when the goal seems far away and the work just doesn’t seem worth it in the end.

Strategies To Help Make Change Easier

Change is challenging and difficult, as mentioned, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. There are a few strategies that can help make it easier.

  1. Start small. Don’t aim for something big to begin with, as it can get overwhelming. Start with small steps or goals and, as you meet those goals, set bigger goals. That way, you can build momentum.

  2. Measure progress. Tracking progress is a great way to stay motivated and to give yourself an indication of how far you’ve come. This helps you to see the progress you’ve made and will also give an indication of when it’s time to change up the routine or set higher goals.

  3. Find Support. Having others cheer you on and hold you accountable to your goals is invaluable. Whether it’s friends, family, or a fitness trainer, having support can help keep you motivated and make you more likely to reach your goals.

  4. Have the right mindset. Getting the right mindset is key to success. The power of positive thinking can be incredibly important, especially when it’s hard to keep going. Positive self-talk can boost confidence and help to keep an individual on track.

Change can be difficult, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. With effort and the right strategies, anyone can make changes to their life. Having the right mindset and plenty of motivation will help individuals to keep going and achieve their goals.
